Hello Families,

Highly Hands-on is back from a small hiatus this summer. You may think that I took a vacation, however it was quite the opposite. The Museum had so many programs going on that I had a tough time finding a moment to write. However, here I am to share what I did on my summer “vacation” and to give you a little preview of what the fall is going to offer.

The Museum welcomed over 4,000 kids during our camp program this summer. Visiting groups were able to go on a safari looking for animals in our permanent collection and then make a bird mask in an art workshop. Here are a couple of examples of finished products:

Other groups chose to tour our summer special exhibition, Rising Up: Hale Woodruff’s Murals from Talladega College. These murals haven’t left the College since they were installed by Woodruff. We are lucky to have them here for the summer and the camps who got to check these out really loved them. In the workshops they made mini murals that told stories about their communities. Here’s a glimpse of kids in the gallleries and what was made in the workshops:

Rising Up is on display through September 2. Be sure to stop by and see it before it travels to its next venue.

As you can see, we had a really great summer, however the fall is going to be pretty spectacular too. We are excited to welcome our second major exhibition from the Museum of Modern Art in New York titled Fast Forward: Modern Moments 1913>>2013. It’s going to be a great way to explore many important modern artists in our very own galleires.

Stay tuned for more fall fun updates to come!
